Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
