Thousands Left Without Power in Queensland and Victoria Following Intense Storms

Around 25,000 households in south-east Queensland woke up lacking electricity on Monday's dawn after intense storm systems impacted the state, producing wind gusts topping over 100 km/h.

Large Frozen Precipitation and Extensive Damage

Locals observed large ice chunks reaching sizes of 7cm in particular locations. The Bureau of Meteorology announced that multiple regions across Queensland had been impacted by significant hail.

The recent thunderstorm has absolutely smashed our power system!

Emergency crews were working to restore electricity service throughout the affected regions, with nearly 70 crews working to manage the extensive power failures.

Victorian Climate Difficulties

At the same time, around one thousand households in the southern state also experienced electricity disruptions after Melbourne experienced its wettest day in 18 months.

State Emergency Services handled over five hundred calls for help across the area, primarily for structural issues but also for collapsed vegetation and flooding.

Hardest Hit Areas

  • Werribee - recorded considerable destruction
  • Hoppers Crossing area - various assistance requests
  • Wyndham area - nearly 180 emergency requests

During the peak on yesterday, in excess of twenty-eight thousand power users in Victoria were lacking electricity.

Meteorological Predictions

Damp conditions were predicted to continue along significant areas of the state's eastern regions this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to attract humidity against the coast.

The following day was predicted as the wettest day, with persistent thunderstorm potential anticipated across multiple regions of both areas.

Safety Concern

Public health experts cautioned that there was an increased chance of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the northern rural areas, especially given the current weather patterns.

This warning comes after previous incidents where comparable situations led to substantial respiratory problems in the area.
